Children's book research

To be sure I had an up to date knowledge of the children's book market to meet the audience of Adrian Mole books, as I do not know anyone of the target age, looking in the biggest book stores childrens sections was the best way of seeing what the most attractive, bold, and best selling covers looked like.

The covers are all bold and colourful, with humorous illustrations of main characters which I find appropriate for the fantasy aspect of childrens/young teen stories and is what I aim to do anyway as illustrating is the most fun, least clinical way of representing the story on the cover which is crucial to the well known long time known book.

Many have the main character in the centre or their head looking up to their title, setting the scene and the perspective of the character with an introduction to their world and story, which can be done in so many ways from funny to very artistically.

The design must not be overcomplicated or over plain; these kids books are the sorts of designs I would love to create and is why I chose this brief in particular. Fun illustrations with creative and consistent hand drawn, striking titles and humorous drawn perspectives of the character and their worlds.

Being at a disadvantage not knowing any young teenagers or children, gaining a high volume awareness of the current market of the target audiences books and seeing what attracts the audience to picking up the books, with a desire and eagerness to start illustrating fun and colourful compositions has set me up well and I am excited to start. I feel that the target audience would be picking up the book due to it's cover, or because it is popular amongst friends in school or is represented on kids TV shows.
