Being a proud Manc me and a friend from school who is now a graphic designer at Mytton Williams have come up with a project that combines our love for the city and it's infamous music, which I am absoloutely aiming to get exhibited in the city centre. After general design talks, Chris suggested a project to work on:
'So the concept is we take 10 movies or songs and both create a representation of the song or movie. Nothing super literal or figurative, and we use different mediums and techniques to make our images/designs i.e. photography, illustration, print etc. Then we take our designs and make it into a book, or printed on some specialist/decent stock, maybe printed using some cool inks or duo tone. Basically it’ll be a really nice creative exercise which we can do in our own style which means we don’t have to compromise or change ourselves instead we can showcase our different approaches and styles.'
Instantly I was excited as we have different sets of skills- Chris is very digital based/modernist influenced with two internship experiences and his job at Mytton Williams in Bath since graduating. Both of us really love our music and creating an ode to Manchester's musicians was where the most ideas were coming from so we have decided to do 10 songs in poster form. We aim to not be to obvious with our designs and use a mixed media approach, creating rather abstract designs.
Many artists ode's to the music in poster format are lyric/collage based but we want to create ambiguous, abstract pieces that represent the song through the media and how it is printed.
